At some point, nearly every homeowner faces this tough question: Do I repair my current air conditioner, or is it time to replace it altogether?
It’s not always a black-and-white answer — especially in the Okanagan, where our systems work hard during those hot summer months and then sit idle in the cooler seasons. But there are some clear signs and smart factors to consider when weighing your options.
Let’s break it down.
🔧 When a Repair Makes Sense
In many cases, repairing your AC is the faster and more budget-friendly choice, especially if the unit still has some life left in it.
Here are situations where a repair is usually your best bet:
-
Your system is under 10 years old. Modern air conditioners are built to last around 15 years or more with regular maintenance. If yours is relatively young, it may have many good seasons left.
-
It’s a minor issue. Problems like clogged drain lines, a faulty thermostat, a bad capacitor, or a blown fuse are all common and relatively inexpensive to fix.
-
The system has been well-maintained. If you’ve kept up with seasonal tune-ups and filter changes, a sudden issue is probably not a sign of total failure.
-
Repair costs are low. A good rule of thumb: if the repair is less than 50% of the cost of a new unit, and the system is under 10–12 years old, repair is usually the better choice.
-
You’re not staying in the home long-term. If you're planning to move soon, a quick repair may make more financial sense than a full replacement.
🆕 When It’s Time to Replace
Sometimes, a repair is just putting a Band-Aid on a bigger issue. If your AC is older or showing signs of deeper trouble, replacement could save you money (and stress) in the long run.
Here are signs it might be time to replace:
-
Your system is 12–15+ years old. Even the best-maintained systems wear out. Aging parts, reduced efficiency, and outdated technology make replacement more attractive.
-
It uses R-22 refrigerant (Freon). This older refrigerant is now phased out in Canada and is expensive to source. If your unit needs a recharge and uses R-22, replacement is likely the smarter move.
-
Breakdowns are becoming frequent. If we’re seeing you a little too often, your system may be trying to tell you something. Multiple repairs in a short time are a red flag.
-
Your energy bills are climbing. Older systems lose efficiency over time. A newer high-SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) unit can significantly lower your monthly cooling costs.
-
Your home isn’t cooling evenly. Struggling to cool certain rooms? That could be a sign your AC is undersized, worn out, or no longer up to the task.
-
You want to upgrade. Today’s systems offer smart thermostats, zoning options, quieter operation, and better indoor air quality — a big win for comfort and convenience.
